LARRY GUS – 54 MADLIB BEATS
A tribute to the LA loop-digga Madlib the bad kid. The mix jumps from Lord Quas to Madvillainy to his more recent Medicine Shows, weaving a rich tapestry of sounds and obscure samples unearthed by the Beat Konducta in record stores from all over the globe.
THE HEATWAVE – GYAL POWER
Jerk chicken, Red Stripe, chocolate coated daggering, looking for portaloos, following floats and Scottish policemen who have no idea where Westbourne Park is? Yes, West London’s biggest street festival the Notting Hill Carny is nearly upon us. The Heatwave crew prove in this mix that the women of dancehall can bring as much fire and ferocity as their opposite sex.
EL-P AND KILLER MIKE – RUN THE JEWELS
As expected EL-P’s beats have this confident level of energy that can out-rival Yeezus’s star-studded production team and still non-conform to any specific Hip-Hop trends. Because of this it might not be as identifiable as some albums out there but it is nevertheless a fresh and undoubtedly original piece of work. The biggest surprise here is how well EL-P dominates the mic and sometimes even Killer Mike, a heavyweight lyricist is forced to up his game to equal the level. Still they compliment each other perfectly, like two juggernauts wrecking havoc with psychic understanding of each others next move. Underground rap’s answer to Watch the Throne, the duo make more interesting statements and even out brag, through lyrical prowess, Jay Z and Kanye West. A real gem of an album and a bit of a steal to give away for free!
“Your idols all are my rivals/ I rival all of your idols/ I stand on towers like Eiffel, I rifle down all your idols/ Niggas will perish in Paris, niggas is nothing but parrots/ I write for the writers that write for the liars that impress you and your parents” Killer Mike – Sea Legs

ROME FORTUNE – BEAUTIFUL PIMP
For anyone who hasn’t been blown away by the likes of Trinidad James or Future’s youtube-blockbusting “anthems” or the so-called ‘New Atlanta Movement’, especially after the capital’s history in Hip Hop, then Rome Fortune comes as a sigh of relief. Rome’s music has all the symptoms of southern Hip Hop; tales of strippers and pimping, hard hitting 808s and claps… However you soon realise that Rome stands out because his approach to these topics is from a less glamorous angle, and just as the cover, Rome tells it like it is. The productions from C4 and Childish Major have to be credited as well. ‘Art Of Art’ takes a wonderful, unexpected change of direction and ‘Help Wanted’ is another example of these bi-polar beats that shift between two moods. While ‘DanceDance’ and ‘Balcony’ may not be your typical twerk bangers, but along with Rome’s cool and withheld vocals on top, a girl somewhere will surely be making it clap for him. ‘Bitches on a Track’ with Miloh Smith’s vocals and ‘Ice Cream Man’ are other highlights on this ATL up and comer’s mixtape.
